Field Report: Toycon 2010: Day Two (June 20, 2010)

We didn’t know beforehand that Day Two of this year’s Toycon would be much more fun!

I went again together with my girlfriend. At the mall, we met up with Otaku.ph contributor bakaranger.

IMG_0418We arrived at around noon, and seen from outside the Megatrade Hall, the event itself was more or less the same. In fact, it looked much more spacious, and there was far less participants than the day before. Even the long line towards the entrance was nowhere to be found. Little did I know that the day was just starting.

IMG_0400 We went to the Custom Shirt maker first to create our official Otaku.ph T-shirt, and it took more than an hour for the shirts to be printed. We went back to the Toycon at around 3pm, and boy was there a LOT of people. A very important note we immediately realized was that there was about four times more cosplayers, and just as much photographers. We didn’t need to purchase entrance tickets as a good bulk of the cosplayers were outside, waiting for the cosplay competition to be held that afternoon.

We blasted away and took shots left and right until our small point-and-shoot camera’s battery was dead. We got about a hundred pictures before we, ourselves, gave up – our legs dead tired and our tummies growling in hunger.

That was when we parted ways, my girlfriend and myself went on to have a very late lunch, while bakaranger went back inside the toycon to watch the competitions and buy more manga.

IMG_0381While eating, we decided to rank the best cosplayers based on the shots we took of them, their poses, and how pretty they were in real life. From the 100 shots, we filtered out about 30 finalists before finally narrowing it down to 20. The results of our own top 20 rankings have been posted in this site for a couple of days now, and it can still be accessed via the link at the bottom of the top-banner.

The rest of the photos were uploaded to an Ovi Share account. However, due to security reasons, we had to deactivate that account temporarily. It is still being decided where the pictures will be hosted, but we’ll update you as soon as it’s ready.

Finally, a day after Toycon, the official URL of otaku dot ph has finally been launched and activated: you can now access this weblog using any of the following addresses:

In the future, we plan on adding file hosts (http://ftp.otaku.ph/), and maybe even an adult section (http://hentai.otaku.ph), who knows? Anything is possible, and we have a lot more in store for everyone, so please keep coming back. ;)

Congratulations to the organizers of the Toycon for a successful Toy Party. As a promise, bakaranger and myself decided that otaku.ph will definitely have a bigger participation in next year’s edition of the Toycon.

As for this year, our site’s good start is already enough for us to celebrate.

Banzai!

  3. Hi Michico,

Please understand that this is a blog site, not the offical website of a commercial organization, run by a group of four friends who share the same interest. We only named the blog otaku.ph because the otaku.ph domain (http://otaku.ph/) was available.

Although adsense is enabled, it is not the primary purpose of this blog to gain revenue. However, if you insist on holding exclusive rights to your license, which we do understand, we can always change our blog name. The domain "otaku.ph", though, cannot be changed as it was fully paid and registered to us, so all we can do is re-point it to our would-be new site.

Please understand also that, although we appreciate the offer to join you, we cannot accept this as blogging for us is just a hobby, we have our own jobs to think about, and being tied and committed to an organization would not be beneficial to any of us. That is why renaming is the more feasible option to us.

Please allow us a few extra days to check with the appropriate people, and if ever, rename and restructure our blog.

Please expect an email from me in the next few days.

We do apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

  5. Hi Michico,

I have forwarded this issue to the co-owners of the site and they are all willing to move away from the “otaku.ph” name if it is rightfully and legally so.

In lieu, our legal counsel wants us to ask you for the proper documentation, so everything would be clear on both sides. If you could please provide us with the following, we would appreciate the effort.

    • Your “otaku.ph” license, including documentations, reference numbers, and the actual sitename or product licensed
    • An E-Mail from an official Pixel Media domain
    • Since you are representing Pixel Media, your name and official designation in the said company, so we can address you properly in any future documentations that we may need to process

Again, thanks for the offer, but none of us are really interested in pursuing a career in writing, so we’d rather have our own blog where we can express ourselves in our own way.  We will continue to support “otaku.ph”, and what it represents, even as we move to a different name.

We hope you are not taking any of these the wrong way.

  7. Will give you the prior documents as soon as possible.

In the meantime, let us talk about my offer to you.

I'll pay you the domain fee that you paid. I'll let you join our company. have your own blog domain, and have the administrative privilege.

Let's put up this way. the team have been working on this site for months now. and we're about to register Otaku.ph on ww.dot.ph.

However, you came in faster as we are. we are actually about to register it today.

Now if you could please let us. and try to consider my offer to you.

Just think of the help that you will lend us.

Otaku.ph will be much famous, members will be huge. we will advertise this on ads,

    The features are:

    Blogs
    Social Network
    Photos
    Videos
    Events
    and other stuff.

We already planned ahead, and we already prepared all the things needed. including the site script (in the local server)

It's just the domain. you had it first.

Now. I am asking your consideration, and let us have the domain. and be part of our team. (you can still blog, you can transfer your blog content too, and be the administrator)

    Hoping for your consideration

(about your concern about official domains, we actually have our own server via Hostgator, and it is a dedicated one. and can have multiple domains, with unlimited bandwidth and space)

currently it is registered as "www.imchico.com" < this is the main server and the domains and such will be online afterwards. (like otaku.ph)

If you have doubts in our capabilities, you could drop by in our office at Paseo De Roxas Makati City (ill email you the full address if you want)

  8. if you have the time. please drop by in our office so we could give you the prior documents that you are asking.

one of my team will assist you regarding that matter.

  9. Hi,

We are all really busy people. We are all currently employed in different companies, and none of us have any plans of pursuing a career in writing or web design. Not to mention that one of us isn't even based here in the Philippines. I would just like to re-iterate, we write to express, not to make a living out of it.

At this point we don't see the need for face-to-face discussions. What we are asking for, simply, is proof and some details of the licenses you mentioned you have copyrighted in your first post. A scan of the documents would do, but if that, too, is too much to ask, then please provide us with at least a reference number and the name of the licensing body (DTI, SEC, etc) so we can call them on our end to get the details we need.

We will honor your help and hospitality.

    Thank you very much.

  13. See, here's our dilemma.

You said in your first post that "otaku.ph" has been registered and licensed to a company (which you later named as Pixel Media). You even threatened with legal charges, since according to you, "copyrighted materials and name are referenced."

What we're asking for, therefore, is not proof of Pixel Media's existence or competence, but rather, proof that it owns all exclusive rights to "otaku.ph", and that no other website can use that name.

We are looking for a document (patent, registration, anything) that EXPLICITLY states that Pixel Media owns the "otaku.ph" name and that no other company/person can use that name.

If you can provide us this, then we would gladly and cooperatively part with our domain and move to a new one.

Please understand that we need proof beyond your company's business registration. Again, it's not about Pixel Media, it's about the ownership of "otaku.ph".

If you would prefer sending the documents via email, please send them to our shared email address at otakudotph@ovi.com so that the other owners can access them.

  14. there's no such thing as SEC or DTI, when you are offering a website solution for one group or company

Pixel Media is a Web designing company, we offer solutions, we offer scripts and designs.

Our previous client asked us to make a website for Otaku.ph

(do you know the flaws of web designing? and how to business goes?)

The client paid already for that domain , and for that name. and we are about to upload it under that domain. and

If you are still not contented in what we showed you It's up to you now.

I think this is enough and we will just file something regarding with the client.

Regarding the threat. we are not threatening you. we are just telling you that there is such companies that has been waiting for the domain already and in fact it is already in the waiting list.

We are offering you a good business. if you do not want it, its really up to you.

    Thanks.

  15. You said in your first post that "otaku.ph" has been registered and licensed to a company (which you later named as Pixel Media). You even threatened with legal charges, since according to you, "copyrighted materials and name are referenced."

    ^
There are such copyrighted materials already (on our client's side) such as official receipts, transactions and softwares bought.

    Which beyond our limitations.

We are only offering them a web design and hosting.

And It's just you got the domain first (seconds before we checked out at dot.ph)

That's why we offered you to let us buy this domain and pay you double.

But you still insist. It's ok.

  16. This statement : "we are just telling you that there is such companies that has been waiting for the domain already and in fact it is already in the waiting list. "

is different from this: " "Otaku.ph" has been registered already and already licensed in one company.
Legal charges will be done for these matter."

sorry dude, the first one who pays for it gets the domain registration. those who are in the waiting list are meant to wait.

    nuff said.
